Horned screamer

Anhima cornuta

Hoornhoenderkoet / Hornwehrvogel / Kamichi cornu

The Horned screamer (Anhima cornuta) is a member of bird family Anhimidae, which occurs in wetlands of South America; from Colombia (including Cauca and Magdalena Valleys) and Venezuela to Southern Brazil (recently recorded in Espírito Santo); also in Guayas, Western Ecuador. There are three screamer species, the other two being the Southern or Crested screamer (Chauna torquata) and the Northern Screamer (Chauna chavaria).

The horned screamer has a long spiny structure projecting forward from the crown. This structure is unique among birds and is not derived from a feather but is a cornified structure that is loosely attached to the skull and grows continuously while often breaking at its tip. This gives this species its name.

This species has a large range, with an estimated global Extent of Occurrence of 10,000,000 km². It has a large global population estimated to be 25,000-100,000 individuals (Wetlands International 2002). Global population trends have not been quantified, but the species is not believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e. declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations). For these reasons, the species is evaluated as Least Concern.

Only a few zoos have Horned screamers in their collection, mainly in Latin America. Since 2015, a few birds are on show in Weltvogelpark Walsrode (Walsrode Birdpark, Germany).
