This crane is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN because it is thought to be experiencing a rapid and on-going population decline, largely as a result of the loss of wetlands to agriculture and economic development.
The total population is estimated at 5,500-6,500 individuals, based on estimates of 1,000-1,500 individuals wintering in China , and a 2009 count of 1,920 in Korea (Lee Ki-sup in litt.2012) and a maximum count of 3,142 in 2009 at Izumi, Japan (S. Chan in litt. 2012). Double counting is possible between the Korean sites and Izumi due to movement of birds during the wintering period.
