The white-winged duck (WWD), Asarcornis scutulata, is one of the most threatened duck species in the world. Its population has largely disappeared in the last century and the species is likely to be reclassified as "Critically Endangered" category in the light of the latest field surveys.
The EAZA Waterfowl Taxon Advisory Group and White-winged duck EEP are committed to actively take part in the ongoing conservation actions for this species and their collaboration with the Indian government will progress in the next years. In the meantime, the EEP is working on increasing its number of participants to create new breeding pairs and a better genetic mix.
These Best Practice Guidelines (BPG) will help provide the best care for these birds - which are extremely vulnerable to avian tuberculosis – with information compiled from scientific literature, WWF project guidelines and the experiences of 21 holders.
